Erik Jansson: Microscopy and mathematics
Understanding protein structures with microscopy is vital for drug discovery. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) captures 2D images of frozen biological molecules from various angles, using these to reconstruct their 3D structure, revealing shape and function. For mathematicians, this raises intriguing challenges, as reconstructing 3D structures from 2D scans is an inverse problem—often ill-posed, with similar protein conformations producing identical projections. In this talk, I’ll share my perspective on addressing these questions.
