Beskrivning
This workshop aspires to engage the students into a creative sound design activity for robot communication. Our aim, as researchers and teachers, is to cultivate interdisciplinary thinking at a young age by combining interpersonal, artistic and technical skills.
The students will be assigned different scenarios for designing a robot "voice" in groups. The term "voice" here, is used metaphorically as our aim is not to anthropomorphize the robot sounds, but to use sound information as a medium for robot communication. The students will assign emotional characteristics to their designed sounds. For example, they will be designing communication sounds for happy or angry robots.
During the workshop the students will be encouraged to sketch, brainstorm, and mimic with their own voices – commonly known as vocal sketching – the imaginary sounds. For the sound design part, they will be interacting with a graphical interface on tablets to create their own distinct robot "voices" by manipulating sound parameters. After the sound design activity, all groups will showcase their designs, and prizes will be given out to the most creative sounds and to the sounds that were most understood by the listeners.
NOTE: This workshop can engage a maximum of 20 students per session and is conducted in English.
