The word “manga” means much more than “Japanese comics.” In Japanese, it has designated copybooks and funny drawings, single images, graphic narratives, and, at times, even animated films. Using lots of visual examples, this talk will first provide a brief historical overview, then turn to the so-called cinematic techniques of postwar story-manga, and finally take a closer look at one of them, namely extreme close-ups of faces. How manga’s famous “saucer eyes” operate will serve as an entry point to a new academic field that combines Japanology with Comics Studies: Manga Studies.
